Prior to the shutdown of its broadcast operations in 2020, ABS-CBN was the largest television network in the Philippines. As a radio broadcast company, it operated 22 radio stations including anchor radio stations in Mega Manila, DZMM and DWRR, in the AM and FM bands, respectively. 
 
The company delivers television programming outside of the Philippines to over 3 million viewers in North America, the Middle East, Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada, and other countries in Asia, through the internet and the Company’s global distribution platform, TFC, using DTH satellite service, cable television channels, IPTV, mobile applications and video streaming services. Its offerings are further complemented by subsidiaries focused on other multimedia services such as film production, music recording, telecommunications, and magazine and book publishing. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

    The primary responsibility of the Assignment Editor is to make sure that ABS-CBN News is the first to get the story correctly and is first to break the story on air.

    His/her daily functions include overseeing content development, minding a set or group of reporters, providing story direction, information and assistance in gathering interviews or acquiring video.
     
    • Act as minder of all stories, vets and checks the accuracy of stories or reports provided by reporters before sending it to the platforms; should be able to encode inputs, updates to a story being handled by another desk editor.
    • Act as minder of reports; creates the Story Slug and informs the reporter or cameraman (if without a reporter) of the Story Slug of his/her assigned coverage (to be carried in the reporters advisory and the cameraman's tape label).
    • Monitors story development, get stories and advisories from reporters & submit to Chief Assignment Editor.
    • Creates the MOS Object Placeholder using the Story Slug.
    • Makes a new Newsgathering Item, immediately upon receipt of information on a Breaking News Story.
    • Coordinate and make follow-ups on stories and advisories from the earlier shift, and properly turn over the same plus updates to the next shift desk editor.
    • Ensures that ABS-CBN news gets the story right and will be the first to break it regardless of platform.
    • Makes sure teams are able to assemble and deploy the most appropriate resources to get the best possible elements for each story to air on time, at best, ahead of the competition.
    • Follows up on the schedule and timing of live shots and feeds, secures necessary information on the incoming material and advises those concerned to ensure optimal use (there may be better or different material than expected) and airing of the material on time.
    • Helps assess the progress of stories and coverage for possible inclusion in breaking news or earliest scheduled newscast, deployment of ENG, SNG equipment. 
    • Provides all concerned with necessary notice regarding graphic or violent video and language, ethical and legal constraints, special agreements, embargos, etc.
    • Attend daily story conferences in the morning or afternoon, or as assigned.
    • Find and provide enterprise stories for reporters.
    • Assist reporters on how they can better treat or angle their stories.
    • Lobby stories with Executive Producers for inclusion in the news programs' line-up.
    • Communicates and coordinates with News Producers and other Desk Editors on story developments.
    • Collate and input "Futures" coverage for reference.
    • Creates a Newsgathering Item in the Newsgathering Grid, upon assignment of a story/coverage to a reporter/cameraman.
    • Provides inputs on next day and future coverage, story pitches or enterprise stories, maintains a pool of contacts or sources.
    • Provides or facilitates logistics support for possible live or transmission of video and data.
    • Proposes and develops systems to improve news gathering operations.
    • Handles the performance management process for direct reports. Accountable for the training, discipline and development needs of team. Assessment forms 50% of the direct reports' PA. The 50% assessment will be from the Chief of Reporters.
    • Oversees budgets and ensure assigned resources are effectively managed.

REQUIREMENTS

    • Graduate of journalism, broadcast communication or related field.
    • Excellent knowledge of current events and relevant history.
    • Posseses solid experience in the field of news gathering, reporting, news analysis up to presentation of news stories.
    • Knows how to tell a story, able to capture complex situations and tell it in simple terms for audience to understand.
    • Has very good news sense and able to provide relevant news according to platforms served.
    • Able to maintain solid network of sources.
    • Good leadership and people skills. Able to motivate, mentor, and develop team members.
    • Good organizational and analytical skills.
    • Flexible, able to make sound management decisions and a quick thinker specially when it comes to handling breaking news and special news coverage.
    • Able to make credible and sound editorial judgments.
    • Excellent in both written and oral communication skills in both English and Tagalog.
    • Able to effectively deal with people from all levels in the organization as well as in various socio-economic and political groups.
    • Effectively manages stress not only of self but team as well.
    • Willing to work on extended shifts including weekends, holidays and overnights.
    • Familiar or have a working understanding of broadcast technologies, from computers, audio and video equipment to microwave and satellite transmission equipment.
